SAS (Statistical Analysis System)

The SAS Essentials

Guide of basic SAS knowledge and the most used options

SAS Overview

SAS is a collection of software products provided by the SAS Institute Inc. of Cary, North Carolina. SAS is a platform independent system that allows users to store, manipulate, and retrieve large amounts of data for statistical analysis and custom reporting.  SAS is used primarily for research and development and data warehousing.

The SAS language is a database procedural language, much like SQL, that allows users to generate code to accomplish tasks. SAS uses datasets (tables) comprise of observations (records) made up of variables (columns or fields). The SAS programming language is made up statements within data steps or procedures. Macros are used in place of repeated code.

SAS programs (*.sas) do require SAS software to compile and run. SAS software is typically used on a central server with multiple yearly licenses by companies. Single PC applications on a yearly license can also be purchased. Many educational institutions have student licenses and teach various SAS levels of education.
